PULA

Pula, the largest town in Istria, is over three thousand years old and is a mix of modern and ancient architecture. There are many examples of the Roman era, including the Triumphal Arch of Sergi, from the 1st century, the Temple of Augustus and the Hercules Gates. A stunning open-air Roman Amphitheatre, dating from the 2nd century AD, dominates the Pula landscape. Its 5000-seat arena stages a full itinerary of both international and domestic performances, including classical and rock concerts, opera, ballet, theatre and film festivals. One can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and explore one of Pula's many landscaped and varied parks. It has many cobbled streets and squares filled with cafes and bars. As one would expect from a large town, Pula offers a comprehensive selection of stores, supermarkets, boutiques and a large open-air market, selling local vegetables, fish and meat. There's a wonderful choice of restaurants offering locally caught fish and traditional meat specialities cooked on an open grill or spit. Pizzeria offering pizza cooked in traditional wood-fired, stone ovens. A fantastic variety of clean sandy, pebbly and rocky public beaches, including the Kamenjak National Park, made up of countless natural secluded beaches, just waiting to be discovered and explored. Activities offered include clay tennis, horse riding, rambling, cycling and golf on Brijuni Island, with a new 27 hole golf course imminently under construction in Liznjan. There are water sports of all kinds, including scuba diving, jet skiing, water skiing, pedalos, banana boats, fishing, as well as boat excursions around the islands. For sailors there are boats for hire or charter from the numerous, well-equipped marinas which offer full mooring facilities. There are organised day trips to Venice and other parts of Italy, by boat or coach. There's also a casino, nightclubs, a large and small children's fun fair, an open air cinema, climbing, bird watching, an outdoor karting venue, galleries, museums, aquarium, gymnasium and a flying school offering panoramic sightseeing tours. Pula has an international airport just 10 minutes from the centre and fantastic connections to Italy and the rest of Europe by plane, train, car or ferry, making Pula exceptionally accessible.
